The Carolina Brewmasters again would like to thank the staff at Rock Bottom for their hospitality and excellent service.  We will be back!!

President

·         PTC news – The cap has been popped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Keep tuned for anything from PTC related to the governor signing (or ignoring) the bill.   Please make note of the senators that voted for the bill and thank them; please make note of those that don’t and insure that you don’t vote for them

·         Showing the true diversity of the club, one of our members, John Oshman, was actually at the senate roll call in Raleigh when the bill was passed; he provided us with his impression of the process.

·         IMPORTANT INFO on the next two monthly meetings.  The September meeting will be held on Wednesday August 31; the October meeting will be held on Wednesday September 28.  Both meetings will be held at the Mellow Mushroom on North Davison Street and were move so we could have sufficient meeting time before the Oktoberfest.

·         Is brewing during the summer dead?  Not according to the significant number of beers that members said they brewed throughout July!

·         The Pop the Cap fund raiser to be held in September at Bruno Wichnoski’s home on Saturday.  It will be a Belgian beer tasting and we will be charging $20 per person to attend.   We will also be holding a silent auction which will consist of some very fine beers.   The club will provide the meat (Bruno’s smoked pork butts) and side dishes are welcomed.  We are limiting the attendance to 40 people.  Contact Todd Bowman to provide any beers for either the tasting or the raffle as well as any beer related items you’d wish to donate to the raffle.

·         The Palmetto State Brewers are planning an all day trip to Asheville to visit 4 breweries on August 27; they have invited any CBM member that would be interested to join them; contact Gary Cathey for more information.

·         Gary Cathey will be celebrating National Mead Day in style by holding a mead brew session.  This will be a really great event with various varieties of honey to be tasted, beekeepers will be on hand, commercial and homebrewed meads will be available for tasting, all will have an opportunity to purchase ingredients to make a batch of mead (all using a different yeast strain!) and homemade brats for lunch.  The website has complete details.

Recruiting

  • Welcome new members!  We welcomed 5 new/perspective members/guests.
  • Sara Siedel again asked for volunteers to sign up; by meetings end we had commitments from more than 100 people!

Education

  • Bill Lynch held a brew session on Saturday July 9th.  He brewed one all grain (an imperial IPA) and two extract brews (American wheat and an IPA).   The IIPA was bottled on Saturday; the IPA kegged on Saturday and the American wheat was racked on to 8 lbs. of fresh peaches awaiting racking to a tertiary fermentation.
  • BJCP study sessions.  The fourth study session was held on June 8; the fifth study session is scheduled for July 20; attendees, don’t forget your reading assignments.
  • Club will subsidize any exam takers whether first timers or judges looking to move up in the ranks.
  • We are looking for volunteers to hold brew sessions at their homes from August to the end of the year.

Competitions

  • Next competition is MALT in Asheville on September 24; we need entries to keep our lead!  They will offer on line registration and we will advise when it’s active.  We would like to have a strong presence (attendance-wise) in Asheville since it is such a huge competition (450+ entries expected).
  • Keep in mind, the MALT competition will permit entries the day of the competition ONLY by judges that arrive that day; more info on this later; likely some members will drive up the night before to deliver entries.
  • CBM currently leads in the CBOY brewclub of the year 104-78 over the Palmetto State Brewers; they are energized and looking to kick our butts!! DEA is in 3rd place with 49 points.
  • CBOY is seriously interested in hosting the AHA southern regional competition but it would require changing the date of the US Open; Todd Bowman, the CBM CBOY representative, spoke briefly outlining the proposal.  A hand vote indicated overwhelming support for the idea.
  • Reminder:  The schedule for 2005 AHA Club Only Competitions is:
    • August  – French and Belgian Ales – Category 16
    • September/October – European Amber Lager – Category 3
    • November/December – Baltic Porter – Category 12C

Social Events

  • Tony Profera will be accepting Paypal payments for attendance at the Belgian beer tasting PTC benefit being held in September.  Complete details are on the website.
  • We are planning a club sponsored trip to a Charlotte Knights game on Friday August 26.  We will need an email to confirm your attendance.  This will imply that you are going and a ticket will be purchased for you; if you don’t go, you eat the cost of the ticket.  Bill Lynch will notify members shortly.

Oktoberfest/Treasurer

  • The 2005 Oktoberfest will take place on Saturday October 1.  It will be held at the same site as last year and we will be incorporating a series of changes to the event as suggested at the committee’s post-fest meeting.
  • Felton gave a rundown of the progress that has been made to date which is significant.  Food vendors have been selected, we have received commitment from Cabot Cheese to provide 250 lbs. of assorted cheeses.
  • Brewers Support Committee – we currently have commitments from 16 micros, only 3 short of last year’s total.  We should easily break 20 with 25 not out of the question.
  • Ale Clayson has requested that we supply him with a number of Oktoberfest flyers and $5.00 off coupons that he can include in outgoing orders.  We will supply them to Jess also.
  • We are also going to post a copy of the coupon on the various websites which people can cut out and use.
