Carolina Brewmasters Club Meeting                                                         August 31, 2005

President

·         The next meeting will be held at the Mellow Mushroom on North Davidson Street at 6:30 on Wednesday September 28; a mere three days before the Oktoberfest

·         Again the meeting was attended by Bill Marren of the Gambrinus Company and a representative from Cunningham Distributing who introduced Bridgeport IPA and Blackstrap Stout to the group.  Both are new to the Charlotte market and samples along with pint glasses were available to members

·         Apparently our extremely hot August didn’t deter many members from brewing as was evidenced from the monthly polling

·         The Pop the Cap fund raiser to be held in September at Bruno Wichnoski’s home on Saturday.  It will be a Belgian beer tasting and we will be charging $20 per person to attend.   We will also be holding a silent auction which will consist of some very fine beers.   The club will provide the meat (Bruno’s smoked pork butts) and side dishes are welcomed.  We are limiting the attendance to 40 people.  Todd Bowman was nice enough to send a list of the beers and it will be one hell of an event!!

·         The Palmetto State Brewers conducted a brewery tour of Asheville last Saturday.  A few CBM club members were in attendance.  Everyone who attended had a great time with the star of the day to be Carl Melissa’s Belgian Strong (Green Man Brewing)

·         Gary Cathey celebrated National Mead Day in style by holding a mead brew session.  About 18 members signed up to do a three gallon batch using different yeasts.  There were commercial meads, homemade meads, a variety of honey to be tasted, a presentation by Steve Paynter on beekeeping and a selection of great food including Gary Kunes’ homemade brats.

·         A small but enthusiastic group of Brewmasters attended the Charlotte Knights game on Friday August 26.  They were treated to Bill Lynch’s IPA, Karl Keyes’ Rye IPA and a few Flying Dog high gravity beers brought by Justin Mitchell.  The Knights actually won the game on a night on which the weather was perfect for baseball

·         Upcoming beer events:  The world Beer Festival in Durham (October 8) and the Asheville Brewgrass Festival (October 22)

Recruiting

  • Sara Siedel is organizing the volunteer list for Oktoberfest.  A sign up sheet was  passed around for those who have yet to sign up.  Looks like we’ll have more than enough volunteers

Education

  • BJCP study sessions.  Session 8 is scheduled for September 21;  stouts will be covered; attendees, don’t forget your reading assignments
  • Club will subsidize any exam takers whether first timers or judges looking to move up in the ranks
  • We are looking for volunteers to hold brew sessions at their homes from September to the end of the year
  • Lee Eskridge has volunteered to hold a brew session at his home on Saturday September 17.  Details and directions are available on the website

Competitions

  • Next competition is MALT in Asheville on September 24; we need entries to keep our lead!  They will offer on line registration and we will advise when it’s active.  We would like to have a strong presence (attendance-wise) in Asheville since it is such a huge competition (450+ entries expected)
  • Keep in mind, the MALT competition will permit entries the day of the competition ONLY by judges that arrive that day; all other entries need to be in by September 10.  We will likely have someone drive up with any non-judges entries
  • CBM currently leads in the CBOY brewclub of the year 104-78 over the Palmetto State Brewers; they are energized and looking to kick our butts!! DEA is in 3rd place with 49 points
  • Reminder:  The schedule for 2005 AHA Club Only Competitions is:
    • September/October – European Amber Lager – Category 3
    • November/December – Baltic Porter – Category 12C
    • January 2006 – Belgian Strong Ale – Category 18
